The Decision to Review Algeria’s Association with the EU Was Driven by Economic Indicators

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune stated on Sunday that the revision of the Association Agreement between Algeria and the European Union is based on economic data.

According to a statement from the Algerian Presidential Administration, Tebboune, during a session of the Council of Ministers on Sunday, which he chaired, noted that in 2005, when the agreement came into effect, Algeria’s exports were predominantly hydrocarbons. However, today the country’s economy has become more diversified. Specifically, Algeria has increased exports of agricultural products, metallurgy, cement, foodstuffs, and more.

The statement also quoted Tebboune as saying: “The revision of the agreement with the EU is not due to disagreements but is aimed at maintaining good-neighborly relations and mutually beneficial economic partnerships between Algeria and the European Union.”

The President of the PDRA reiterated that Algeria has not prohibited imports in any sector, instead implementing measures to protect local businesses whose production volumes meet the needs of the domestic market.

Tebboune emphasized that the stated goal of revising the agreement is to regulate imports in various sectors, as well as to prevent frequent attempts to speculate on products whose imports are not prohibited.
