Russia and Algeria to co-operate in forestry and water management

MOSCOW, 27 October. /TASS/. Russia and Algeria have agreed to develop co-operation on forestry and water projects. The press service of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources reports.

‘Reforestation is one of the priority areas of Russia's forest policy. In 2021 and 2022 we managed to achieve an excess of the area of reforestation over the area of dead and felled forests. In 2022, more than 1.3 million hectares were reforested. In 2023, we plan to reach 1.4 million hectares. We are ready to share our experience with our Algerian colleagues’, - the press service quotes the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia Alexander Kozlov on the results of negotiations with the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Algeria Mohamed Abdelhafid Henni.

In particular, the Algerian side expressed interest in developing co-operation in the field of reforestation and afforestation. In addition, the heads of ministries agreed to hold in 2024 the first meeting of the working group on the implementation of the memorandum of co-operation in the field of water resources, signed in June 2023. Areas of cooperation are also outlined for geological study and mapping, assessment of Algeria's mineral resources reserves, as well as organisational and technical assistance and training.

‘Our multifaceted co-operation has a strong potential for further development. We are determined to promote it comprehensively. Regarding Russian-Algerian co-operation in the field of environmental protection and rational use of natural resources, we are ready for fruitful work in the following areas: geology and subsoil use, water resources, environmental protection and forestry,’ Kozlov added.
