LIFE.ru has released the documentary “New World. Algeria” about modern life in the country and what still connects Algeria and Russia decades later. The authors visited historic cities and the Mediterranean coast, a hospital in Lakhdaria where Soviet doctors worked in the 1960s, Algerian carpet weavers and the backstage of the national opera. Today the two countries’ relations continue in business, education and the arts.
Akhmed Azimov, Chairman of the Russian-Algerian Business Council, said in the film that Algeria, one of the largest economies in Africa and the Arab world, is changing its economic policy: it seeks to increase local production, modernise industry and gradually reduce imports. According to him, this opens a “window of opportunity” for Russian companies. He named agritech, oil and gas technologies and energy, pharmaceuticals and the digital economy as the most promising areas.
The film is in Russian and runs 33 minutes; Akhmed Azimov speaks from about the 10th minute.
