Algeria strengthened its position as Spain’s largest natural gas supplier in July 2026. According to Spanish gas system operator Enagás, Algerian deliveries accounted for 41.7% of the country’s total gas imports.
Algeria was well ahead of other suppliers: Nigeria accounted for 15.4%, the United States for 11.6% and Russia for 8.1%. Over the first seven months of 2026, Algeria’s cumulative share reached 34.8%.
Medgaz plays the central role
Most Algerian gas reaches Spain directly through the subsea Medgaz pipeline. Additional volumes are delivered by sea in the form of liquefied natural gas.
Algeria’s proximity to the European market and direct pipeline infrastructure reinforce its role in Southern Europe’s energy security. Amid uncertainty surrounding global LNG routes, this gives the country an important logistical advantage.
Higher deliveries also increase the importance of projects in production, processing, transportation and port infrastructure. For Russian energy and engineering companies, this trend matters when assessing the regional market, opportunities for technological cooperation and changes in the structure of European gas imports.
