TASS: Azimov — Algeria Could Become a Hub for Russia’s Entry into African Markets

MOSCOW, April 23. /TASS/. Algeria’s infrastructure may serve as a gateway for Russia’s access to African markets — mechanisms have already been outlined that will help Russian companies enter the market more quickly and safely. This was reported to TASS by Ahmed Azimov, Chairman of the Russia–Algeria Business Council.

According to Azimov, at the center of discussions during the business mission of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) in Algeria were topics related to industrial cooperation, joint investments, and the establishment of production facilities in Algeria.

“A separate block of discussions was dedicated to using Algerian infrastructure as a hub for accessing African markets. We also raised issues of settlements, certification, and support mechanisms — with a clear request for institutional backing. And this support exists. The Algerian side demonstrates a high degree of engagement,” Azimov said.

He noted that mechanisms enabling Russian companies to enter the market more quickly, more easily, and more securely have already been outlined. “This is no longer about intentions — it is an active working agenda,” he emphasized.

“As for trade: current bilateral turnover stands at around $2 billion. This is a significant figure, yet it does not reflect the real potential. According to expert assessments, the potential reaches $10 billion. To move toward that figure, clear instruments and functioning cooperation channels are required — and that is precisely what we are now building,” Azimov explained.

The business mission of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Algeria will run until April 25. Among its participants are more than 20 Russian companies operating in IT, industry, pharmaceuticals, construction, and energy from Moscow and several Russian regions, including the Lipetsk and Ryazan regions, the Chechen Republic, Tatarstan, and Krasnoyarsk Territory.

The Russia–Algeria Business Forum, organized jointly by the Russia–Algeria Business Council and the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of both countries, will continue until April 24. The agenda includes a plenary session, delegation meetings, B2B negotiations, and the signing of agreements between companies and development institutions.
