Algeria’s Minister of Hydraulics, Lounès Bouzegza, has reviewed progress on water infrastructure serving the Toumiat industrial zone in Béchar Province. The zone is expected to host major industrial projects, including a facility for processing and upgrading iron ore from the Gara Djebilet deposit.
The system provides for the transfer of treated wastewater from the Béchar wastewater treatment plant to the industrial zone through a 60-kilometre pipeline. Additional supply will come from the Toumiat aquifer, where ten boreholes are planned.
The project also includes a 5,000-cubic-metre reservoir, connections between the boreholes and storage facilities, electrification and additional supply through the Guetrani water transfer system. These facilities are intended to provide continuous water supply to the industrial zone and the Gara Djebilet ore processing plant.
Water infrastructure is a necessary component of the emerging mining and metallurgical cluster in south-western Algeria. The programme may offer opportunities for Russian companies in engineering, water treatment, pumping equipment, automation and industrial plant supply.
