Algeria continues to hold a significant position in Africa’s energy agenda, including the development of low-emissions hydrogen and the expansion of international partnerships in the gas sector.
The International Energy Agency’s hydrogen review notes Africa’s substantial potential for low-emissions hydrogen projects. Algeria is among the countries considered in the regional context, supported by its developed energy infrastructure and experience in large-scale export projects.
At the same time, national energy company Sonatrach continues to strengthen cooperation with international partners. In July 2026, Sonatrach and Germany’s VNG signed a natural gas supply contract, confirming continued energy cooperation between Algeria and Germany.
Sonatrach also notes that the two companies are connected through joint initiatives, including the ALTEH2A project and the SoutH2 Corridor, aimed at producing hydrogen in Algeria for export to Europe.
For the Russian-Algerian business community, this trend is important as a signal of Algeria’s long-term energy priorities. Beyond the traditional gas sector, the country is building a basis for new areas of cooperation, including engineering, equipment, infrastructure, hydrogen and methane emissions reduction.
