Algerian industrial group Asmidal, a subsidiary of Sonatrach, has signed a five-year framework agreement with the Environmental Research Center in Annaba to prepare Fertial’s plants for the European Union’s new carbon requirements.

The project provides for the introduction of a measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) system for greenhouse gas emissions at Fertial’s plants in Annaba and Arzew. The system will be developed in accordance with ISO 14064:2018.

Preparing for the CBAM mechanism

The main objective is to ensure that Fertial’s products comply with the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The mechanism covers ammonia, urea and other nitrogen fertilizers supplied to the European market.

Reliable emissions accounting and independent verification will allow Fertial to confirm the carbon performance of its products, maintain access to European buyers and assess carbon-related costs more accurately.

The project creates demand for industrial monitoring systems, automated environmental reporting, laboratory equipment, energy-efficiency solutions and verification services. Russian companies with relevant expertise may view cooperation with Algerian producers as a promising area for industrial partnership.
